In the smart, funny and exciting Second Season of Columbo, it’s no mystery to see why this is the DVD series that mystery lovers have been waiting for!”
Columbo: The Complete Second Season is not rated.
After the novelty of seeing the First Season of Columbo, the Second Season didn’t impress me all that much. The reason was that I had already figured out the formula from the show. A bad guy kills someone, you see how it’s done, then Columbo gets on the case and harasses the suspect until the truth is exposed. It’s kind of like playing cards and your opponent gives you a good look at his hand before starting the game. There’s no real suspense in it and the ending is a foregone conclusion. The lack of mystery or suspense on the show really hurts it. And with a running time of over 1 hour per episode it gets awfully tedious.
Unless you’re a die hard Columbo fan itching to get this DVD set, then I’d say the real novelty of the collection are the cameos. A number of well known stars had guest appearances on the show. In this batch you’ll find Leonard Nimoy, Robert Culp, Valerie Harper, Dean Stockwell, Martin Landau, Marc Singer, Blythe Danner, John Cassavetes, Steven Bochco, and Ray Milland.
So who should pick up this DVD? Well, anyone that bought and enjoyed the first season. It’s more of the same from that set. I imagine Star Trek fans will also enjoy seeing Leonard Nimoy playing a villain in “A Stitch In Crime”. Unless you fall into these categories you might want to pass on Columbo.
There are no extras included on this DVD.
The Bottom Line:
Columbo – The Complete Second Season is mainly for anyone that bought the first season and enjoyed it. Otherwise you might find the show to be slow and unsuspenseful.
