Mini-Review:

I could care less about Hannah Montana, but my daughter is a big fan. She watches all the TV shows and listens to the music. So when this Blu-ray arrived, she was eager to watch it because, for whatever reason, she missed the film in theaters. After she saw it, I asked what she thought of it. “It was boring,” she said. Huh? I was shocked. In fact, I was even more shocked that my young boys enjoyed the film more. They laughed at the jokes and enjoyed the music. It was not exactly what I was expecting!

As already mentioned, I don’t care about Hannah Montana. My only real concern about the film is whether or not it is survivable for adults. I’ll say it’s a good looking film and it’s interesting to see the cast off the studio set and in the real world. It’s also interesting to see the Hannah Montana character actually in a rock concert setting. They always talk about her being a rock star on the TV show but you never get a sense of it like you do here. It was also cool to see Vanessa Williams as Vita, Melora Hardin as Lorelai, and a funny guest appearance by Tyra Banks. A couple of the songs are also memorable, most notably the “Hip Hop Hoedown”.

I can see why my daughter declared it ‘boring’ despite the fact that she was partially being a sourpuss that’s becoming ‘too cool’ for Hannah Montana. The first third of the film is spent showing Miley being a spoiled Beverly Hills brat. She’s not at all likable for a large portion of the movie. The second third shows her alternately moping and making goo-goo eyes at the young stud on the farm. The final third shows her torn between being a pop star and a regular girl. So, in short, she’s rarely the wacky character that everybody likes from the TV show. They also teased that she would be ‘outed’ as Miley/Hannah in the movie and the final resolution of that wasn’t that satisfying though it does show Disney Channel can keep her TV series going for another year or at least till she has some sort of Lohan or Hudgens-like implosion.

This movie is really only for kids and fans of the TV show. I was going to say that only girls would enjoy it, but the fact that my Star Wars/Superhero/Transformer/G.I. Joe loving boys liked it too tells me that there’s a little something here for everyone.

On the Blu-ray you’ll find a large batch of bonus features. There are the usual offerings like deleted scenes (showing more of the British reporter is MIA for much of the movie), an audio commentary, bloopers, music videos, and ‘making of’ featurettes. There’s also a featurette where Osment and Cyrus show you around their hometowns – Nashville and Hollywood. Also included are some tutorials on the dance moves, a digital copy of the movie, and a DVD copy as well.
