Saw Sells 3 Million Units in Week One

Saw, the hit theatrical film released on DVD and VHS by Lions Gate Home Entertainment, the home video production and distribution arm of Lions Gate Entertainment, reigned supreme among this week’s new DVD releases, selling 3 million units in its first week. Saw is the fastest-selling theatrical DVD release in Lions Gate’s history. Released theatrically by Lions Gate Films in October 2004, Saw grossed over $50 million in domestic theatrical box office.

Saw marks Lions Gate’s second #1 home video debut in the last five months. The home video launch of The Punisher, from Lions Gate and Marvel Studios, debuted at number one in September 2004, selling nearly 3 million units in its opening week.

“‘Saw’ is exactly the type of film that we anticipated would resonate with DVD consumers immediately,” said Steve Beeks, President of Lions Gate Entertainment Inc. “This genre is always among the most popular with the DVD consumer and the fact that it was a huge hit at the box office proved that it had captured the imagination of horror film fans everywhere. We also gave it a unique package that has been met with great response from retail and grabs the consumer’s eye.”
