This Week on Blu-ray and DVD: January 27, 2015

Recent theatrical hits arriving on Blu-ray this week begin with the animated musical The Book of Life. Directed by Jorge R. Gutiérrez and produced by Guillermo del Toro, the family adventure explores the story behind the Mexican Day of the Dead with a voice cast that includes Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, Ice Cube and Kate del Castillo. Next up is Fury, an intense military drama set in the final days of World War II, starring Brad Pitt, Logan Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, Michael Peña and Jon Bernthal. Writer/director David Ayer has already lined up an exciting followup: he’ll be helming Warner Bros.’ DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad.

Speaking of DC Comics, the animated feature film Justice League: Throne of Atlantis also premieres today on Blu-ray and DVD.

Currently nominated for an Academy Award for Robert Duvall’s performance, The Judge arrives today and also stars Robert Downey, Jr. as a successful lawyer who returns to the small town he grew up in after his father (Duvall), the local judge, is suspected of murder. 

Some indie releases hitting Blu-ray today include the psychological thriller Before I Go to Sleep, starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth, Nacho Vigalondo’s own intensely stylish thriller Open Windows, starring Elijah Wood and Sasha Grey, My Old Lady, Israel Horovitz’s adaptation of his own stage play starring Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas and Maggie Smit,h and Why Don’t You Play in Hell?, writer/director Shion Sono’s bloody, bizarre love letter to cinema.

From the small screen, “Masterpiece Classic” delivers the fifth series of the hit Downton Abbey while, continuing their HD takes on classic catalogue titles, Olive Films offers a later Frank Capra gem, A Hole in the Head, starring Frank Sinatra.
