A Showgirls V.I.P. Edition is Coming July 27

Video Business reports that MGM Home Entertainment will release a “V.I.P. Edition” of director Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 film Showgirls, starring Elizabeth Berkley, that features additional sexual content, including female frontal nudity.

Among the roster of racy, unrated features is a lap dance video tutorial featuring partially nude Scores dance-club strippers from the perspective of the recipient of the lap dance. Also included in the box set is a “Pin the Pasties on the Showgirl” game that includes a full printed poster of a semi-nude Berkley, pasties and blindfold.

MGM’s DVD pack, set for release July 27 and priced at $39.98, marks MGM’s first foray into marketing accessory-filled DVD box sets for retail. It will also include a deck of Showgirls playing cards, two Showgirls shot glasses, Berkley photo cards and a series of party games: “Sip or Strip,” “Showgirls A-Z,” “Bad Tipper” and “Champagne Room.”

The movie grossed $20.3 million at the box office before becoming one of the hottest video rental titles of 1996 despite being snubbed by Blockbuster, which had a policy of not carrying X-rated or NC-17 rated programming.

MGM has also endowed the new DVD with more traditional bonus features, including an audio commentary by Showgirls expert David Schmader, a video commentary by the Scores girls for the “Cheetahs Club” scene and an animated storyboard-to-film comparison.

The revamped DVD boasts a 16×9 widescreen format and a trivia track geared toward the film’s devoted fan base.
