Norbit Atop the DVD Charts

Eddie Murphy was No. 1 on DVD for the week ending June 10 as his comedy, Norbit, debuted atop the national video sales and rental charts.

Norbit, which earned $95.3 million at box office, easily took the top spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, besting fellow newcomer The Messengers, which bowed at No. 2. “Seinfeld: The Complete Eighth Season,” made a strong debut at No. 4.

The previous week’s top seller, Hannibal Rising, fell to No. 5, while Apocalypto slipped one to No. 3.

In rental stores, Norbit and The Messengers also scored a one-two finish on Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart, with Norbit generating an estimated $4.7 million in rental revenue compared with $4 million for The Messengers, a supernatural thriller that grossed $35.4 million in theaters.

On the high-definition disc charts, also from Nielsen, Norbit debuted at No. 2 on the HD DVD chart and at No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. The top-selling title on the HD DVD chart was “Planet Earth: The Complete Collection,” while the top Blu-ray seller was Apocalypto.
