Live Bloggin' the Super Bowl!

Hey, there!

Edward Douglas here to try something a little different this year. As in the past, you can still catch all of the Super Bowl commercials as they become available live online over on CS Trailers and Clips and can then discuss them here or if you have your computer near enough to a TV, you can talk about the commercials live while watching the game. I've deliberately avoided watching any of the commercials that have been posted online beforehand, so I can experience them for the first time the way they were meant to be viewed, while watching the game. (Sadly, I won't be drinking beer and eating junk food and/or pizza to have both hands free for typing.)

I probably won't have too many comments on the game itself. I've spent half my life in New York and the other half in New England, so I really don't have allegiances with either team, and to be honest, I'm more a fan of the kind of football where you actually kick the ball with your feet than the American version. :)

Anyway, over the course of the next few hours, I'll be writing and posting as I have things to say, so make sure to refresh this post/page frequently and feel free to sign up in order to post comments either about my thoughts on the commercials or your own as we watch the game together. (And feel free to comment on the game if you choose to do so, too.)

NOTE: It's suggested that if you're going to comment, keep two browser pages open, one to refresh to read this blog as it's updated with my comments, and another browser page to post comments. Otherwise, as soon as you post and then hit "refresh" or "back" the comment will be posted twice. (Sorry about that... We're using this time before the game to work out the kinks, including the sudden realization that posting my comments chronologically from the bottom to the top will be easier to read for those refreshing.)

COMMENTS BELOW IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, NEWEST ON TOP
All times are Eastern Standard Time. Please pardon spelling errors... we're live!

10:07 The Game's over... Giants pulled an amazing come from behind by getting a touchdown and then holding it in the last 30 seconds winning it 17 - 14 ... thanks to everyone who read and participated in this year's Super Bowl experiment!

9:50 Game's almost over. Doubt there are any more commercials... Patriots have pulled ahead by four points with 1:22 on the clock and it might be all over for the Giants leaving the Patriots undefeated. Hope you had fun here and enjoyed the commentary. Sorry if it wasn't funnier but I'm kinda tired today for some reason... remember to try to catch some of the commercials you missed and vote for them. If you enjoyed this, feel free to let us know and we'll try to do more of this kind of thing.

9:45 Is it wrong for me to like that Victoria's Secret commercial merely because it features a hot chick? Yeah, I know... I'm sorry. This commercial for AMP is pretty funny with a fat dancing guy jump starting a car with the jumper cables attached to his nipples. Will give that one a 8/10 for sure. Still, not as good as that Coke commercial, which should be in line for a Cleo (the award given for commercials).

9:43 There's an extended version of the Larry Moon Bud Light commercial up at the Bud Bowl site, which includes a lot more ad libs from Ferrell in character. You have to be 21 to enter and view it, though, so you know it's gotta be funny! :)

9:31 Okay, the best Bud Light commercial is also a tie-in with Semi-Pro with Will Ferrell's character Larry Moon of the Flint Tropics making up his own taglines for Bud Light, but my favorite is "Bud Light, Suck One"... this is another no-brainer character for Ferrell, where he can just ad lib a lot of stuff and it works. Haven't seen enough of the actual movie to know if it might be any better than Blades of Glory or Talladega Nights... seems like he's essentially doing the same thing as always. I did think it was a good commercial and did more for the movie than the first commercial we saw.

9:23 Reminder: If you missed any of the Super Bowl movie commercials you missed , you can find them all here...still haven't seen 88 Minutes and I can't believe they'd waste money on that one. If you missed any of the non-movie commercials, most of them can be found here. I think things are starting to wind down and it looks like Giants will defeat the undefeated unless the Patriots pull a last minute touchdown out of their hats.

9:16 Now this is better placement with the new Adam Sandler movie You Don't Mess with the Zohan getting a funny ad with some of the same scenes from the recent trailer. It has an impenetrably long title, but it does look like it could be another good high concept premise. I don't even know when this movie comes out...rewind! Yeah, just watched it again and this looks very funny... definitely can't wait to see this one as it looks like another great character for Sandler.

9:13 A political commercial with James Carvel and... sorry don't know who that is... but it's another great Coke commercial who are really showing up regulars like Pepsi and Bud Light with their commercials this year.

9:06 This is a really cute coke commercial based on the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade with Underdog and Stewie from "The Family Guy" fighting over a bottle of coke... all done as floats escaping from the parade... really funny ending and a very well done commercial. I think this might get my vote for the best non-movie commercial of this Super Bowl... simple but surprisingly effective. I'm definitely not in the minority here as everyone seems to love this commercial on another message board I frequent and I think we could see this win the ad of the Bowl, even if it's placement so late in the game (when people start flagging) is disappointing. Where do I vote? I'm going for this one.

9:02 The commercials have definitely slowed down going into the fourth quarter, not sure if there are any more movie commercials.

8:54 Another Bud Light commercial, this one talking about it giving you the ability to fly... not much better than the breathe fire one.

8:52 Jumper commercial...finally!!!! Great effects and action and this really is going to be amazing movie to see on the big screen... gotta watch that again.

Incidentally, is this the longest a Super Bowl game has had the same score? Been 7-3 Patriots since the 1st Quarter.

8:44 I spoke too soon, cause here's the first commercial for Wall-E with him playing around with a vacuum cleaner, narrated by Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story and it really looks pretty amazing, very cute, but again, wrong audience... not really Super Bowl material. I do think the animation looks amazing and it's almost impossible to believe that it's being done solely with CG. Pixar never fails to amaze... looks another Oscar in their future for this one.

8:40 I think we've given up on a Wall-E Super Bowl commercial... my boss at CS has just added a clip with a vacuum, but not a Super Bowl commercial. Shame, but probably not the best venue for it anyway.

8:35 Richard Simmons is back, thanks to Bridgestone. Man, all these Sarah Connor commercials remind me that I have a bunch of episodes on my DVR drive that I haven't watched yet. Anyone seen the show? How is it?

8:34 And the second most over-used premise for a Super Bowl commercial... cavemen!!! I'd say this is the second best Bud Light commercial. Oooo... Carmen Elektra gets her own Super Bowl commercial. I'm not sure this one is new, but she's such a cutie.

8:32 Shaquile O'Neal as a racing horse jockey... funny visual but I had no idea what it was a commercial for until the last two seconds... so they can afford to spend money for a minute long commercial and the movie studios can't?

8:24 Semi-Pro commercial just went by so fast, I missed it!! Rewind!!! Yeah, that was a 15 second spot at most and it's the first commercial I've seen for this... starts out like Hot Rod and then turns into Talladega Nights... I wonder how long Will Ferrell will be able to get away with doing the same thing in every movie. Guess we'll know soon enough...can't believe this one comes out before the end of the month.

8:20 I love when they show them carting off the sections of the stage for the half-time show... it's a pretty amazing system they have for getting that together and apart so fast, when you consider that most big arena shows could take all day, 10 hours or more, to prepare for a show every night.

8:12 Okay, no "Don't Come Around Here..." not sure what I was thinking. But is that it? Just three songs? Nope... one more, "Runnin' Down a Dream." This Super Bowl is going by so fast in general though... the pre-game dragged and the actual game will be over in less than 90 minutes.

8:08 I hate to obsess on this but I wonder how many of the pretty kids they shipped in for the audience actually own a single Tom Petty record... it always cracks me up. Pretty cool light show, though, and it's always fun to see these half-time mini-concerts. I like this much better than the years they had multiple acts. This has to be the largest audience Tom Petty has ever played for, right? (not counting festivals)

The fake audience needed a few more hours training in synchronized arm-waving...

8:05 Ah, there are the kids shipped in by MTV to run onto the field and make the audience look even bigger and that's a LOT of kids, wonder how many... gotta be 1,000 or more. Petty is looking very old, older than Paul McCartney a few years ago.. McCartney never seems to age.

8:04 I predict that Petty will play "Freefallin'" and "Don't Come Around Here No More"... not sure what else.

7:56 Anyone out there still? Did we lose everyone once the game started? Are there any other movie commercials we're waiting for? Just Semi-Pro?

7:54 Okay, I thought that might have been a Speed Racer ad, but no, it's for the Daytona 500 in HD.... it COULD be Speed Racer if there were a monkey in it.

7:47 Just a minute and a little more to half-time and just a bit longer to the half-time show with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers... wonder if anyone here has seen the Peter Bogdonavich doc "Running Down a Dream", and if so, I hope you saw it on DVD because sitting through four hours of Tom Petty might turn even his most ardent fans against him... I got through 3 and a half hours when it was screened at the New York Film Festival. It's not bad though and has a lot of interesting in-studio stuff with the Heartbreakers and the Travelling Wilburies. We'll see how Tom does compared to Prince and Paul McCartney

7:45 That Doritos commercial, which seems to have been made by a contest winner of sorts, is pretty weird... looks nice, only remotely funny if that. When did Doritos turn into the Project Greenlight of snack chips? I'd rather they offer more chips in their 99 cent bags which have gotten smaller and smaller almost every year. I mean, now a 99 cent bag holds as much chips as a 50 cent bag did a few years ago... and yes, I'm using this blog to push my own agenda re: the amount of snack chips in the bag. :)

7:41 Oh, here's the Justin Timberlake commercial where he's being dragged all over the place and thrown into the East River.... not sure what the point of this is, something to do with someone drinking a Pepsi, which drags him all over the place? Couple funny cameos like Andy Samberg, but not particularly impressive unless you really like seeing JT dragged all over Manhattan.

7:39 This is my favorite ad so far... a lot of images that go by very fast but having been on the set, I know a lot of what we were seeing there and it all looks great. I have a feeling that the visual FX will blow away those of the first movie and that this will be a much darker movie, but one that older moviegoers will be able to like and not just so much for kids. Wonder if they'll be able to get a PG.

7:37 Prince Caspian!!!! Going for the Lord of the Rings fantasy-adventure route... and again... REALLY short.. gotta rewind.

7:34 In case you want to see that GoDaddy.com ad online, you can access it directly here.. it's really bad and it's even worse that they wasted money to advertise this during the Super Bowl, making it seem like the ad was too racy, but it's just bad and stupid. Not sure why Danika did this... another regular Super Bowl advertiser who are way off their game this year.

7:29 Here's the Carlos Mencia Bud Light commercial we saw a preview of earlier with Mencia trying to teach foreigners how to pick up women... okay, this is kinda funny, especially the "sandwich" line, but the original was kind of played so they need to move on with this idea and find something new... hopefully not with CG animals again :)

7:26 I have no idea what the score is 'cause I'm so busy trying to keep up with all the commercials. Definitely like the Budweiser horse in training one the best so far... and I like the Wanted one more than Iron Man. Gotta see Leatherheads again as it went by way too fast.

7:23 Definitely more commercials than gameplay at this point and almost impossible to keep up with them. Pretty hot commercial for "Life Water" (whatever that is), but what is with all of the CG animals in the Super Bowl commercials? Almost every other commercial has a CG animal either talking or dancing or doing something... seems to be the standard Super Bowl commercial formula now.

7:21 Iron Man commercial is up here if you missed it or want to see it again... doesn't really work as well when you watch it over and over... so I won't do that anymore. :) Seriously, the stuff that was shown at San Diego Comic-Con was much better and I don't think 15 seconds gives you enough time to really get into it. Damn the Super Bowl and their overpriced commercial slots!!!

7:19 And the Leatherheads commercial just aired, and it looks a bit like the Coens' Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, which is a good sign that this won't be the serious football period piece some might expect.

7:18 Okay, I don't want to already start nitpicking but the final scene where Iron Man blows up the tank and then walks away, the CG looks a little stiff, which worries me a bit since that was one of the problems with the original Hulk movie, which had a Super Bowl ad and was torn a new one when people saw the CG. At least Iron Man looks great when in the air and maybe that's not the final FX.

7:14 IRON MAN!!!!!!!! Lots of new stuff that we haven't seen before, but it looks very cool. Still too short though... :( Gotta rewind... Great tagline: "This Summer, Heroes Aren't Born, They're Built"... very exciting. I hope it's better than Fantastic Four which also had great commercials but kinda sucked.

7:14 This Budweiser commercial with the horse training for the team is very cute and much more clever than some of the Bud Light ones we've seen. I'll gie this an 8/10

7:13 Looks like the Leatherheads commercial is already up here, even before it's shown during the game. Interesting.

7:06 Checking out Wanted again.. some really cool Matrix-like effects in there and some very cool action. If you haven't seen Night Watch and Day Watch yet, make sure you see them by the summer for Timur Bemambektov's... I can never remember how to spell his name... first English movie. I think this was a good move by Universal as it will sell a lot of people on the movie, since it's such an esoteric comic book that not many people know about it. The commercial is WAY too short... what is it 15 seconds, if that? I'm even more excited about this than when I first heard it was happening... maybe this'll be one of those movies that are different than the comic but great in their own right. Bummed about the delay to summer though.

7:05 Another computer-related commercial using the Rolling Stones... remember the "Start Me Up" commercials for Windows back in the day?

7:04 Will get back to Wanted, but what is up with GoDaddy and their commercial advertising an online commercial on their website? I somehow doubt we see Danicka Patrick nudity even online....but I bet they crash the site as drunk Super Bowl viewers sign on to check it out. Commercials are coming fast and furious now!

7:02 Very cool Wanted commercial with James McAvoy training with his guns and curving the bullets with a Morgan Freeman voice-over and LOTS of Angelina Jolie... going to watch this one again!

6:58 Just saw a fun screaming animal spot for Bridgestone, who is sponsoring the half-time commercial... nice to see a bit more time and money put into these spots than the Bud Light commercials. (Remember their frogs?) I notice that most of the commercials have been very short, probably due to the cost, but can short commercials like these have any kind of impact? Good for the internet age, that's for sure.

Looks like the cute female singer won the Doritos band contest and is now on Interscope with her song on ITunes... wonder if this will get a lot of downloads with just that little snippet from her song.

6:51 Just realized that the Wanted commercial is one of the ones already online.. I'm still going to be patient and watch it on TV.

6:48 Yeah, I'm already going on record that Bud Light just doesn't have the cleverness of advertising of some of their earlier commercials... this cheese one is better than the last one but not much. But let's face it...Bud Light tastes like crap, doesn't it? :)

6:45 Let's try to guess what this is a commercial for... ah, Diet Pepsi Max... not bad. Pretty clever. Playing on the Roxbury sketch from SNL. With Ginseng and MORE CAFFEINE! Sounds like what I need right about now.. I'd give that one about a 7/10 since it took some time to figure out what it was for. C'mon... let's get some Wanted!!

6:37 An Audi commercial that references the horse head in the bed bit from The Godfather, not bad. Also says that the first quarter is sponsored by Universal's Wanted so we should see that commercial very very soon... I hope it's good!

6:36 Bud Light commercial saying that it gives you the ability to breathe fire... hm... not their best lead-off.

6:32 Wow!!! How do they overlay that graphic of the down and yardage right on the field like that? I've never seen it before, but it makes it much easier for those who can't read the stuff at the top of the screen or hear the announcer say which down it is. (Can you tell I haven't watched football at all this year?)

6:29 And another commercial... some Ford truck commercial. I wonder if it runs on vegetable oil like the Chevy trucks. They come back to "Finally... football." Classic. :)

6:28 3 and a half hours since I started this and the game STILL hasn't started....

6:24 I wonder how Paramount is going to be able to promote this movie if Owen Wilson is still fragile from his recent troubles with drugs and depression... maybe he's better now and it won't have the same problem as Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited?

6:21 New commercial for Drillbit Taylor with Owen Wilson opening March 21. A very short commercial that doesn't really give one an impression of what the movie is about, which is about three geeks who hire a homeless man (Wilson) as their bodyguard. Sadly, this doesn't look as funny as the movie probably is, again from what I saw at San Diego Comic-Con last year. But it was so short, which shows that Paramount is not going to spend a lot of money on this one.

6:18 "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks performing "The Star Spangled Banner", anther tie-in!!!

6:14 Vantage Point commercial, not new, but I'm looking forward to seeing this for sure.

6:01 So are companies already paying $3 million for a 30 second spot as of now? Or does it only start once the game does? Because the last few commercials seem kind of unmemorable. (Not to bash Ontario, which is a perfectly lovely place. )

5:55 What is this "Declaration of Independence" piece? *sigh* I'm starting to pine for the actual game because all this pre-game stuff seems to be nothing but filler. I have no idea what this has to do with anything, let alone with the Super Bowl. (This is what I hate about events like the Super Bowl... people use it as an opportunity to grandstand and make deep socio-political statements that have nothing to do with the game.)

5:49 And the Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins commercial also doesn't count because it's the same slapstick comedy commercial we've been seeing for weeks... let's see some new movie commercials already!!!! 40 minutes to go... the longest 40 minutes ever, I bet.

5:47 Frank Caliendo doing John Madden... this seems like an easier one to do, but it's not nearly as good as John Candy doing Madden... boy, I miss that guy sometimes.

5:43 Not sure if this counts as a Super Bowl commercial, but it looks like a new one for Fool's Gold that starts "This Valentine's Day" even though it opens on February 8. It's definitely being sold in this commercial as a classic '30s/40s romantic comedy with lots of kissing and fighting between McConaughy, but also some action and explosions.. it's calling itself "the most touching love story of our time"... wow, really? I just don't see that in the commercials at all and having seen the movie, it's not really in there either. But you gotta admit, Warner Bros. knows how to sell their movies.

5:34 Looks like there will be an all-new "House" after the Super Bowl that will hope to capitalize on the lazy viewers who don't switch the channel to give the show a bump like "Grey's Anatomy" got a few years ago... and there'll be a sneak preview of Jumper during it! Hopefully, that will give us some idea about the movie beyond the effects work and action.

5:30 One hour until kick-off and they've decided to actually talk about the game...'bout time! :)

5:20 FOX is really plugging their upcoming shows New Amsterdam and Unhitched (?)... might as well take advantage of having the Super Bowl to do so, though I'm sure by the time they debut, everyone will have already forgotten about them. Doesn't FOX realize how many people drink while watching the Super Bowl? :)

5:13 Yeah, it was Crowe... can't imagine him being a football fan being from Australia, but what he read did sound a lot more important. Okay, enough talk... let's bring on some movie commercials already!

5:11 Is that Russell Crowe doing the voice-over for this Super Bowl intro piece?

5:07 Ryan's talking to John Travolta who flew himself to the Super Bowl in his own plane and they say he has a movie called Bolt out later this year. I honestly haven't heard about this, but he seems to have nothing to do with the Super Bowl. And the "red carpet" is finished, thank heavens!

5:04 Would it be really wrong for me to comment that Alicia looks like she's gained some weight? Honestly, I'm trying not to be snarky here, but I think her stylist made some bad choices. And again, I say the same thing I did about Paula... is this the right audience for Alicia Keyes? Really? Why would New England or New York be in the house when you're performing in Arizona, Alicia? :)

4:58 - 5:01 I can't say anything bad about Alicia Keyes... I got to work with her about eight years ago and she was super-nice, a real sweetheart and very talented. Glad that she got to perform on the actual field although she's performing for a half-empty stadium with the game not starting for an hour and a half. The fans on the field seem to be a lot older than the group that MTV used to bring in every year for their half-time performances, probably people taken from the stands? This performance isn't particularly impressive without a light show and so no-frills.... but at least the people on the field seem very excited. Is there an Emmy for extras at a Super Bowl preshow concert?

4:56 Not to do with anything, but Samuel L. Jackson is one of my favorite actors, Top 5 for sure, and Jumper is an important movie for 20th Century Fox, so you can expect that the trailer/commercial for the movie will pull out all the best shots. I remember seeing a presentation for the movie over a year ago and it looked very cool. I have high hopes for this... maybe too high?

4:52 Ryan Seacrest is now talking to Samuel L. Jackson with a really bad intro tying into his new movie Jumper... boy, that was a bad gag.

4:50 There's a bit about the making of the new Bud Light Super Bowl commercial which is a continuation of the Carlos Mencia English for foreigners class. Not sure if it'll be as funny the second time around, especially how much play the last one got.
This other Bud Light commercial with lawn gnomes doesn't look very funny either... and it's annoying how all of the bits reference Terry Bradshaw and the Fox Sports hosts. Apparently, only one of these spots will air during the game.

4:47 This is the third Chevy Green commercial I've seen and I do think it's very nobel that the company is pushing environmentally-friendly automobiles. Wonder what the gas companies think of that.

4:36pm A lot of football talk going on, not so much commercials or music or anything worth commenting on... might sign off for the next 20 minutes to work on some other stuff.

4:30p Okay, I realized one problem with this technique and that's when you refresh, the newest comments/updates are at the bottom meaning you have to scroll down so from here on, new comments will be added to the top!! Sorry for the confusion.

2:58p Not starting yet, but just with the pre-show on in the background, I'm shocked that people might actually tune in to watch this stuff so early. They're doing these segments with Frank Caliendo (sp?) doing impersonations of various celebrities talking about the Super Bowl and Fox's NFL commentators, starting with a Dr. Phil impersonation. I have a feeling I'll be getting sick of the pre-show if I leave it on too long.

2:59 Oh, no, they have Ryan Seacrest on hand for a Super Bowl "red carpet"... what the!?!?

3:19 So this "red carpet" thing is even weirder, because essentially, it's a bunch of the actors associated with the movies showing commercials during the Super Bowl. Ryan is talking to Laurence Fishburne who is in the poker drama 21, which is out in late March. I guess Fishburne is also narrating some Super Bowl montage thing, too.

3:20 William Moseley from The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is also there. Nice guy. I've interviewed him a few times over the years, including in Prague on set. Can't wait to see the commercial, though I expect it to include a lot of stuff from the trailer.

3:21 If the writers are really on strike, who is writing these crappy in-between the talking sketches? Any ideas? This Boston vs. New York bit is pretty bad, but I'm glad a dozen character actors from central casting got a paycheck for it.

3:41 I just went out to get munchies to eat while watching and I missed Willie Nelson apparently. I'm sure I'll get over it. And did Ryan Seacrest just steal a joke I was going to make later? Gotta DVR back and see...

3:42 He did kind of steal my "wardrobe malfunction" joke that I was going to make later!! Dammit, Seacrest! I thought it was brilliant and you came up with that one without any writers... I'm thinking like Ryan Seacrest... maybe this isn't such a good idea. :)

3:46 I just wanna know why Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana isn't playing the Super Bowl half-time show... $29 million in 684 theaters, pretty insane, eh? (which reminds me that I better use this slow period to work on this week's Weekend Warrior)

3:48 Now they're doing a informational piece about take out and junk food... they're really hurting to find things to fill this time. I wonder how much of this stuff they can recycle from previous years.

3:49 And yes, there will be a test at the end of the pre-show to see how many of you were paying attention. :)

3:52 When did Jillian Barberie get married and becoming Jillian Reynolds? Definitely not as hot as a married woman, right? (I realize that I rewound to see if Seacrest stole my joke and I fell behind)

3:55 Gotta fastforward over all the party stuff... but there's Hugh Laurie, who obviously got a ticket for having a show on FOX.

3:57 You'll have to forgive me if I comment on commercials that are new. I don't watch a lot of network TV and rarely live like this (God Bless DVR!) so some of these might be old commercials I've never seen, like these Chevy Green commercials. Since I don't drive, I rarely pay attention to car commercials.

3:59 And here's John Krasinski from "The Office" whose football movie Leatherheads, directed by Mr. George Clooney, opens on April 4. Maybe we'll see a commercial for that? I just have this strange feeling that it will be this year's Fever Pitch, a sports movie trying to include romance for women, but not interesting them because it's about football and not interesting guys cause it looks too wimpy. Or maybe it'll be more like Bull Durham in that sense. Either way, Good Night, and Good Luck was my favorite movie of that year (2006?) so I'll be looking forward to it.

4:08 Bah. They're talking about football a lot... what's up with that?

4:10 Okay, this subtitled commercial is too weird... I thought I hit the mute button by accident when I sat on the remote and I started hitting the volume up switch so the next commercial blasted in. I should probably pay a little more attention when they try to do something different, but that was kind of annoying.

4:13 This Frank Caliendo guy is pretty good with his impersonations, although the jokes aren't that funny. Kinda obvious if you ask me.

4:17 Huh? This Paul Brogan guy isn't funny at all, and I think I'm going to be really burnt out if I keep watching before the actual game. Gotta start on the energy drinks pretty soon before I fall azzzzzzzzzzzzz.....

4:20 A commercial for American Idol, as if that show needed to advertise or needed more viewers. Haven't watched this season so are there any standouts? Or haven't they gotten that far? Surprised they haven't done many American Idol Super Bowl tie-ins, like having people perform there.

And as soon as I said that, Ryan Seacrest announced Paul Abdul's performance... wasn't she over as a singer like 20 years ago? She's so obviously lip syncing, it's embarrassing. Wasn't Paul Abdul the one caught in that scandal with a background singer who claimed singing some of her vocals?

4:22 This is very '90s... Abdul never performs on AI so why would they waste time during the Super Bowl pre-show? I don't think the macho guys who watch the pre-show are the right audience for this... or for a "red carpet show" for that matter. At least Ryan hasn't asked anyone who they were wearing, right?

4:24 Lip-synced and not even live... it was taped!!!! So now they're using the Super Bowl not only to hype "American Idol" but to try to save Paula Abdul's career. If Randy Jackson were Pinocchio, his nose would be growing for praising Paula's singing.

Okay, I realized one problem with this technique and that's when you refresh, the newest comments/updates are at the bottom meaning you have to scroll down so from here on, new comments will be added to the top!! Sorry for the confusion.

I love watching the pre-show of all the NFL games, but to make us watch it for 4 hours before the game? this is ridiculous! The only reason I am watching is because of Frank. I think he's so funny when he does his impersonations. I am excited about this game and the commercials to watch

I agree waiting 4 hours for this game is to long.

I agree waiting 4 hours for this game is to long.

It really seems like a lot of filler and I kind of feel bad for the performers who are doing the preshow, since it's probably a big deal, but not quite on par with playing the actual Super Bowl.

I agree waiting 4 hours for this game is to long.

Does anybody know if WB has announced what trailer they were going to put out?

Hm... hadn't heard anything. I have a feeling Dark Knight won't happen... too close to the death of Heath Ledger methinks... Running something for Fool's Gold might be worthwhile...but not worth $3 million (Or whatever it's costing)

I cant wait for semi-pro that looks really funny when I watched the age restricted trailer. I cant wait to see what they do for their Super Bowl spot

I really don't think the Dark Knight really needs a TV Spot. If anything WB should maybe do a Get Smart or maybe Speed Racer.

Totally agree, Kacey... Get Smart might be good and I'm sure they have enough funny moments in the movie to make a good Super Bowl spot... I loved what I saw at San Diego Comic-Con.

You know, one of my good friends does the trailers/commercials for WB and I just asked him, so I'll let you know what he says.

i really like the Pepsi add. I think its clever that they do a silent ad which is really interesting and it was pretty funny

I hate reading subtitles I mean not only in commercials but in movies as well. That commercial was just weird.

Well, I'll know to expect it if they do it again... I had no idea what was going on. Doesn't Pepsi usually do the biggest star-studded commercials at the Super Bowl? Doesn't seem to be the case these days.

Mike B if You keep on Refreshing the Page the thing you last type actually shows up again. I learned that today as well.

lol thanks i was wondering what the hell was going on...sorry everyone

Really? I seem to be going to a different page. I think if you hit "back" and then forward again, it will repost, but I'm not sure.

Ah, yeah.. I just did that, hit back and my comments showed up again. Gotta work the kinks out methinks.

I have 2 pages open of this same page One is for just Refreshing and the other is for typing comments.

BTW it seems that the Singers they got for this SB don't interest me what's so ever.

Good idea, Kacey... I'm going to suggest that as well.

I'm still getting comments at the bottom I don't know if you fixed it yet.

Your comments will stay at the bottom but in the body where I post my comments, they'll be posted at the top of the list rather than the bottom, so you don't have to scroll down.

Trying to make this easier... but this is a work in progress.

I'm still getting comments at the bottom I don't know if you fixed it yet.

Oops. Sorry about that Refreshed the wrong page.

That was a pretty bad gag but Jumper looks like a cool movie.

Bolt I hear is a Animated Disney Movie. About a Dog being a Superhero Jeez Um Underdog anybody?

Really? that doesn't sound like a good idea considering how badly Underdog bombed.

Just found out... won't be anything from Warner Bros. during the Super Bowl.

this is totally away from the super bowl but i just found out from reading comingsoon that they are talking about making an Arrested Development movie. This made my day. Anything else you can say about this Edward? Are you a fan?

I am a HUGE fan of Arrested Development and it's one of the only TV series I bought on DVD as soon as it came out. While I think it's a great idea from a purely selfish POV (I love the show!), I worry that it might be like Firefly/Serenity where it didn't have enough of an audience on TV to warrant its continuation so making a movie might not be profitable, unless they can make it really cheap like the Reno 911 movie. I'll definitely go see it for sure. Kinda surprised that Universal would do it rather than FOX, especially since that's the exact same scenario as Firefly/Serenity, wasn't it?

Well there was the WB TV Spot Fools Gold.

Yup, I don't want to bash the movie but I'm throwing down a flag for "False Advertising" on that one. :)

I really can't wait to see the Narnia preview and the Iron Man one I know the Narnia preview is online but I want to see it on TV. It will also be interesting if there is a Wall-E TV Spot

I'm waiting for the Iron Man promo. Jon Favreau posted on his myspace for the movie that it will be early in the second quarter. This movie is a must see for me. Long time IM fan.

I hope we'll get more people once this thing starts.. I think I've gotten the hang of it after the last two hours of practice. Everything working for the two of you here? :)

I'm good and ready for this...lets hope we get a go game(go pats) and some good commercials(semi-pro).

I haven't seen any commercials for Semi-Pro yet, not one, which is kind of weird. I'm also really looking forward to the Iron Man commercial, which I hope will include more of the footage that was shown at San Diego.

Drillbit Taylor looks like a kid version of Superbad to me for some Reason.

Well it's co-written by Seth Rogen, so there has to be some sort of connection there. Maybe a prequel to Superbad? :)

Whoa!!! the Iron Man ad was just too freaking much! need to see it again!

Some Pretty good TV Spots for Wanted and Iron Man.

Both of them are already up at comingsoon.net/trailers... these commercials are WAY too short.

I want to see what Disney shows us for Wall-E

Hey EDouglas I've been keeping up with your commentary. Just wanted to say that I enjoy reading your reviews, even when I don't agree with them, which is more times than less but I enjoy them none the less. Keep up the good work!

Do we know what quarter the WB will show their "?" trailer?

film01fan... not happening. WB's only offering was "Fool's Gold".... oh, right, there's still WALL-E... not sure this is the best audience for it, to be honest. I haven't seen anything for Semi-Pro yet.

Really! I thought they would have submitted a Speed Racer spot or at least Get Smart?

PS: sorry for the double post earlier.

According to my source, WB figured it was a waste of money to spend 3 million for a 30 second commercial that goes by so fast people will miss it. I kind of agree with them even though "Get Smart" would have gotten a great bump from the Super Bowl.

I figured out a tip... once you post a comment, click on "Main" and then on "Live Bloggin' THe Super Bowl!" and you're back on the main page which you can then refresh.

Yeah I discovered that as well. Thanks though.

As the WB, I can see where they would be coming from and agree. I just find it odd that "we" recieved a Get Smart International trailer last week and we haven't had anything new in theaters since their first ad last fall.

Well, they still have some time for Get Smart. I'm guessing they'll want to put something in front of a strong comedy, maybe even Semi-Pro (though it's a different studio). I have to say that the stuff I saw for Get Smart really impressed me... this could be a new Austin Powers if the movie's as good as the clips I saw.

That's really refreshing to hear because I love Steve carell and Ms. Hathaway but Peter Segal doesn't leave me with a lot of hope. That's just looking at his track record though.

Ain't it cool.com had a great report about the film as well when they visited Mr. Segal in his editing bay, so I do have high anticipation for the project, its just locked away at the moment.

I dunno.. I think Peter Segal is really good at comedy and at action.. he did the remake of The Longest Yard and one of the Naked Gun movies... I don't think he's a bad director at all.

He's a lot better than most comedy/action directors I'll give him that.

A little off topic, but do you know how WB are going to approach the Dark Knight marketing after the tragic passing of it's main marketing focus?

Nope, but I expect they'll give it a month or two before doing anything more. I think there's enough awareness this far out that they don't have to do commercials or another trailer this far out. I expect we'll see stuff in March or April.

Sorry I worded that a little oddly. I meant, since the Joker was their main focus are they going to stick with that, personnally I would concider it a great honor to Heath if they did, or change their focus because of his death.

Back on topic, I liked the cheese Bud Wieser commercial better than the recently aired flying one.

March or April is what I predicted as well. It was a huge tragedy but the public notice for that film increased significantly!

I don't see what people see in that jumper movie it looks so bad sam jackson looks weird with blond hair lol

His hair reminds me of Wesley Snipes in Demolition Man!

Thats exactly what i thought, that commerical of the new wall E movie got me wondering about toy story 3. I looked it up and it said they were making a 3, but they stopped production.

"stopped production?!" Maybe because of the writer's strike?

007: I just think it looks like a cool action/effects movie with a cool premise... I'm not sure the writing/acting will be there but hopefully there'll be enough "jumping" and fighting to be worth it.

Yeah, they were making Toy Story 3 and I'm sure it's halted because they can't work on the script right now but I think they were shooting for '10 for that one.

no it said they got a different writer and producer, then they changed their mind and said they wanted their old writer back, so they stopped production

concerning Toy Story 3:

I read somewhere (don't remember exactly) that TS3 will be released in 2010 in 3D. To help prepare for the release, supposedly Disney/Pixar are re-releasing TS and TS2 into theaters in 3D as well (TS in mid-2009 and TS2 in early 2010). Hope this helps. wish I could remember where I read that.

We're almost done here, folks, so what was your favorite Super Bowl commercial, both movie-related and non-movie?

I'm going with Prince Caspian for movie and the Coke one with the Thanksgiving Day parade floats for non-movie. And you?

I gotta say my fav commercial was the bud light commercial with will ferrell. i think he is so funny. btw Ed if you go to semi-pro.com you can check out a R restricted trailer that has one of the funniest lines but i cant say it here
