The Rock Conquers The Kingdom for #1

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and check back on Monday for final figures based on actual box office.

Four years ago this weekend, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson starred in Peter Berg's action-comedy The Rundown, but in an odd twist of fate, the collaborators were forced to face each other at the box office and Johnson's family comedy The Game Plan (Disney) held a decisive win by grossing an estimated $22.7 million to the $17.7 million earned by Berg's Saudi thriller The Kingdom, starring Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner.

Last week's top movie, the action-horror threequel Resident Evil: Extinction (Sony/Screen Gems), took an expected plunge, dropping 66% to third place with an estimated $8 million, bringing its gross to just under $37 million.

The R-rated Lionsgate comedy Good Luck Chuck, starring Dane Cook and Jessica Alba, dropped to fourth place with $6.3 million, having grossed $23.5 million in ten days.

Lionsgate also held the #5 spot with James Mangold's Western 3:10 to Yuma (Lionsgate), earning another $4.2 million as it continues to be one of the strongest films of the month, having grossed nearly $44 million, more than any movie currently in the Top 10.

Sixth and seventh place were held by Jodie Foster's thriller The Brave One (Warner Bros.) and the Billy Bob Thornton comedy Mr. Woodcock (New Line) with $3.8 and $3 million respectively. The Brave One has grossed $30 million in three weekends while Mr. Woodcock has yet to reach $20 million.

The Top 10 was rounded out by Julie Taymor's Beatles musical Across the Universe with $2 million, up 5% from last week despite playing in less than 500 theatres.

It kept the new MGM drama Feast of Love, starring Morgan Freeman and Greg Kinnear, out of the Top 10, as it settled for opening at #11 with $1.7 million.

Wes Anderson's fifth movie The Darjeeling Limited (Fox Searchlight) opened in two theatres in New York City on Saturday after premiering as Opening Night at the New York Film Festival, and it averaged an astounding $70,000 per theatre, which should bode well for its expansion to other cities on Friday.

Ang Lee's Chinese period drama Lust, Caution (Focus Features) also opened in New York City in just a single theatre, where it averaged $61,700 for the weekend.
