Six New Movies, None in the Top 3

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and check back on Monday for final figures based on actual box office.

Despite the release of six new movies in wide or semi-wide release, Sony's comedy Superbad, produced by Judd Apatow, stayed on top for a second week in a row with $18 million, while Universal's The Bourne Ultimatum and New Line's Rush Hour 3 were in a tight race for second place as each brought in just over $12 million.

The big surprise of the weekend came in the form of Rowan Atkinson's comedy sequel Mr. Bean's Holiday , which beat all the other new movies opening this weekend despite opening in significantly fewer theatres.

With a respectable drop of 45% from its impressive opening weekend, the $20 million budgeted Superbad has grossed $65 million in ten days, while the Matt Damon action thriller ends its fourth weekend with $185 million in its coffers and Brett Ratner's third Rush Hour has grossed $109 million after three weekends.

Settling for fourth place, the Rowan Atkinson comedy sequel made an estimated $10.1 million in 1,714 theatres, opening just ahead of the Lionsgate action-thriller War, starring Jet Li and Jason Statham. More significantly, the Bean sequel had the second highest per-theatre average in the Top 10, with an estimated $5,900 per site, but that's still quite a bit behind Bean's opening ten years ago. War opened in fifth place though with only $121k between them, things might change by tomorrow.

Opening in 2,629 theatres, the most of the new movies, The Weinstein Company's adaptation of the best-selling novel The Nanny Diaries starring Scarlett Johansson, failed to find its intended female target audience, grossing just $7.8 million, a meager average of less than $3,000 per site for sixth place.

The other three new movies in moderate and wide release wound up outside the Top 10 with Rod Lurie's Resurrecting the Dawn opening at #15 with $1.85 million in 1,605 theatres. Franc. Reyes' crime drama Illegal Tender, released by Universal into 512 theatres, came out slightly behind it with $1.4 million, while the historical drama September Dawn , starring Jon Voight, was released by Slowhand Releasing into 857 theatres, and though early estimates have it making a million dollars, it's more likely to end up with closer to $600,000 when actuals come in tomorrow.

Back in the Top 10, Fox's animated hit The Simpsons Movie dropped to #7 with $4.4 million, having grossed $174 million.

Matthew Vaughn's fantasy epic Stardust, based on the graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess, continued to hold up well, as did New Line's Hairspray. Stardust made just under $4 million this weekend to bring its total to $26.5 million while the hit musical has grossed $107.5 million with $3.5 million of that coming from this weekend.

The top 10 was rounded out by Warner Bros. remake The Invasion, starring Nicole Kidman, which had the biggest drop of the returning movies, down 47% to $3.1 million in its second weekend.

In limited release, Justin Theroux's debut Dedication, starring Billy Crudup and Mandy Moore, opened soft in four theatres with just $24,000, which makes it unlikely that the Weinstein Company will continue with its planned expansion.

Last year, the top 10 led by Mark Wahlberg's football drama Invincible grossed $76 million, which was bested this weekend by nearly $10 million according to estimates.

They (Weinsteins) better continue on with the planned expansion!! I really want to see that movie! :/

Ethan, yeah I wonder if they will. I'm really disappointed with the opening, but also with the lack of press coverage for the movie especially considering how many people were at the junket. But seriously, it's a movie that should work just as well on DVD if you can't catch it in theatres.
