5th Harry Potter Charms the Box Office

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Be sure to check back on Monday for final figures based on actual box office.

Going into the weekend with nearly $65 million grossed on Wednesday and Thursday, Warner Bros.' fifth movie based on J.K. Rowling's boy wizard, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, added an estimated $77.4 million more over the weekend in 4,285 theatres, including IMAX theatres which featured an exclusive 3D sequence. The fifth "Potter" movie has grossed $140 million in its first five days. By comparison, After Dark Films' thriller Captivity, starring Elisha Cuthbert, barely made a mark, winding up outside the Top 10 with $1.5 million with a dismal average of less than $1,500 per theatre.

Even though "Order of the Phoenix" had the smallest opening weekend of a Harry Potter movie with an average of just over $18,000 per theatre, its Wednesday release played a large factor in that and in its five-day opening gross of $140 million puts it ahead of The Matrix Reloaded as the sixth-highest grossing movie in that category. $7.3 million of that amount was made in the 91 IMAX theatres setting a new 5-day record for the format over last year's Superman Returns, which only played in 76 IMAX theatres. In its first five days, it's also $20 million ahead of the last movie in the franchise Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and $30 million ahead of the last one to open in the summer, 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Reportedly produced for $150 million, Order of the Phoenix should follow the preceding four movies at making back its cost.

After setting a new first week record for a non-sequel, DreamWorks' Transformers slowed down its pace, dropping nearly 50% in its second weekend for a solid second place of $36 million. Over the weekend, it also crossed the $200 million mark and with $223 million in its coffers after two full weeks, it will be competing with "Order of the Phoenix" to be the fourth-highest grossing film of the summer.

Continuing to do well, the pre-4th of July openers, Disney/Pixar's animated Ratatouille and 20th Century Fox's Live Free or Die Hard both held up remarkably well against "Potter." Ratatouille grossed $18 million in its third weekend to raise its total to $143 million, but still putting it $13 million behind Pixar's 2006 release Cars after three weekends.

Dropping to fourth place, the Bruce Willis action sequel added another $10.9 million over the weekend to bring its own gross to $103 million, putting it in a good place to make back its $110 million production budget.

Warner Bros.' romantic comedy License to Wed added 111 theatres on Friday and held well in its second weekend, dropping just 29% to $7.4 million. It's grossed $30.5 million in two weeks.

The first of three movies in the Top 10 to retain their placement from last week, Dimension Films' Stephen King thriller 1408 grossed $5 million remaining in sixth place with a cumulative gross of $62.2 million.

The Steve Carell sequel Evan Almighty dropped another 43%, allowing 1408 to pass it, as it winds up with and unimpressive $88 million after four weekends in theatres. It ended up just ahead of Universal's other comedy Knocked Up, which added another $3.6 million to its total of $138 million.

MIchael Moore's controversial health care doc SiCKO also opened in a few more theatres and had a respectable 26% drop to make $2.6 million to retain its place at #9 with a running total of $15.9 million after three weeks in wide release.

Opening at #12, Captivity continues After Dark Films' dismal streak at the box office after February's wide release of The Abandoned, although the Elisha Cuthbert thriller nearly doubled that movie's opening.

Opening in 33 theatres, the Don Cheadle biopic Talk to Me grossed $391 thousand, an impressive average of just under $12 thousand per theatre, which points to a strong nationwide expansion in two weeks. Patrice LeConte's comedy My Best Friend was released by IFC Films into three theatres where it grossed $46.5 thousand, and the Sony Classics drama Interview, starring Steve Buscemi and Sienna Miller, scored a little less than that in twice as many theatres.

Last year, the Top 10 grossed $147 million thanks to the continued success of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and the introduction of two popular comedies, but that amount was exceeded by nearly 11% this weekend thanks to "Order of the Phoenix" and the other strong summer releases.
