Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - What Did You Think?

This weekend, the Silver Surfer rides into theatres, joining the returning cast of superheroes in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Tell us whether you liked it, hated it, how it compared to the first movie, to the comic or any other thoughts you might have about what you thought was great, what sucked, what worked and what didn't by posting in the comments below.

Comments (36)

It was somewhat cool but no, Tim Story should make them with more bigger action that some what we can see that affects the world in horrible ways, and not try and hide everything I hope u understand what I mean

I loved the movie. I like how Tim Story didn't try to squeeze too much in and end up cutting major details out (ala. X-Men:The Last Stand, Spiderman 3) The plot was written well and the elements from the comic books were excellently pulled from and pieced together.

A lot of people will say that this movie is disappointing or that it sucks but they aren't looking at the big picture. One point in question is the appearance of Galactus (or lack thereof) I was a little disappointed that you don't really actually get to "see" Galactus except for a shadow that he casts on Saturn's rings as he's approaching earth in one scene. Tim Story said that the explanation for how much of Galactus is actually in the movie is a secret simply because there are other projects involving Galactus as a character on the whole. Can we say the Silver Surfer movie?

The ending to FF4 leaves it wide open for FF4:3 as well as the start of the Silver Surfer spinoff. I'm actually looking forward to the Silver Surfer movie because they did an AMAZING job with him!!

As a sequel I feel that FF4:2 is a solid and excellent successor to the first movie (which I already liked)

As always from the standpoint of being a comic book nerd myself and having read most of the Marvel stories growing up I can understand the criticisms. I also know how to give credit where credit is due. Tim Story is a wonderful and insightful director! I hope that he's able to surpass himself when they're ready to do FF4:3 in the future. If he can keep up the quality perhaps this will be one trilogy that doesn't sink like Spiderman or X-men did in the end.

Like it or hate it FF4:2 doesn't aim to be anything more than what it should be. It's a great sequel touching all the right points in the right places without leaving you confused. I'm looking foward to seeing more! Let's hope the third isn't made simply for the money's sake like those other two Marvel trilogies that died in the third sequel....

Go see it!

This movie was just a boring and pointless as the first movie. Why do the studios insist on giving us crap like this? maybe this movie will really bomb and they won't be able to afford another one.

It is what it is...a Comic Book Based Movie. I just saw it and thought it was Very Well Done. Remember Comic Story Lines take months, a film has 90-120 minutes to relay that same story to the viewer.
I thought this movie was much better than Spidey 3, which was way too long and full of boring pointless moments. This film was very well paced and...the Surfer was Very Cool!!
Comic Book Fans Can Not compare these movies with their counterparts as they will always be let down. I remember seeing the Exorcist and somebody saying "the book was way better, and this was missing, and that part was missing." Yeah, I'm sure it was better, but, it also took you a month to read. So, don't be so hard on it...it's FILM.
Also, I do believe if they actually did show Galactus, it may have come off being cheesy. It was better to keep it to the imagination...the shadow on Saturn was enough for me personally.
Check It Out !!! It's a Fantastic Fun Flick!!

Well Well Well, another summer let down by non other than Tim Story, and Lawrence Fishburne as the voice? LOL! this movie had some great cg shots but thats it. THUMBS DOWN.

MAJOR SPOILERS...NOT THAT IT SHOULD MATTER, IT'LL SAVE YOU SOME MONEY!!!!

Wow... I think I'd rather watch Gigli then see that crap again.....Galactus is a Cloud???? Even if he's meant to be hiding in the cloud that just sucked... Johnny became Super Skrull to defeat Doom while Doom has the Power Cosmic ?????..... Then to defeat Galactus Surfer flys into Galactus (or Galactus's magic cloud whatever) and shouts some crap along the lines of 'We are no more' then he explodes taking Galactus with him????? With Galactus giving him the power cosmic wouldnt he be able to withstand it?? ... I'd have rather seen the Ultimate Ga Lak Tus Locust then Hurricane Galactus......then there's Doom...ok he's waken up by Surfer flying by him....better then Folgers I guess...I can deal with that. Surfer beats him up and he's completely healed from all his scars...cheap gimmick to show Julian's face... I can live with that.. The FF team up reluctantly with Doom...dont buy that....Doom gets the Power Cosmic and looks great... A++++...but he still sucks ass...Power Cosmic People...should be unstoppable....but apperently the Super Skrull..opps sorry..Super Human Torch can take him... Now I did like Silver Surfer though..they did great on him....but nothing else...even Jessica Alba looks like crap with her hair looking like a bad wig...I liked Storm's hair better in X1 and Thing looked crappy then the first one.... now I usually love any comic movie, I usually dont care if it doesnt match the comics completely, I loved Spidey 3, I liked X3. But I'd rather watch Man Thing, Elektra, even David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury before I'd watch that again... sorry if you liked it, but I didnt.......

i saw this last night. Ill say i liked it better than the first one. But i wish it was pg-13 and it was longer, it was too short! The first 15min i didnt like much but once the surfer shows up the movie is better from there on. I have to say what was up with dr. dooms hair!! lol! Jessica alba lost too much weight she looked better in the first one. But her ass still looked great in the ff4 suit. Over all it was better than that stupid ass ghost rider movie. But X2 is still the best comic book movie ever!!!!!

I just viewed this most FANTASTIC Super hero movie and need I say more , I must !, believe me when I tell you this is the very best ! Tim Story , THANK YOU ! , This masterpiece is most definitely the best movie out this year ! better than Spiderman 3 , and better than pirates 3 , Im sure MR. Stan Lee agree's and MR. Jack Kirby would be proud ! again , a big THANK YOU ! to MR. Tim Story and all those who made this movie possible .

This film was much better than the first one, but I was very disappointed in the portrayal of Galactus. I think everyone in the theater was.

Doom, in his armor, looked great, and he was his typical evil self. Sue looked HOT, Johnny more mature, Reed more self-assured. I still want a CGI Thing as he really needs to be much larger in stature, no offense Chiklis.

Other than that, very good movie overall.

This movie was great, to say the least. It was much better than the first one, and trust me, I went in thinking that the movie was going to be crap like the first one, and they really blew me away with this movie. The special effects and CGI were, to say the least, excellent. Everything looked really beautiful and shiny, and the acting was great as well, except I was expecting a little bit more out of Jessica Alba, and sometimes, it actually seemed like she didn't care about what was going on in the film. Chris Evans really blew me away. I didn't think he could do just great acting, but he really pulled off a great on-screen look. The story also seemed well developed, at least more than the first one was. Of course, there was room for improvement, but I think they really handled the movie well. I give this movie a good 8.5 out of 10.

i just got back from seeing FF2 and i gotta i loved it.

my likes:

-Silver Surfer was awesome another achievement in CGI work

- Fantasticar actually looked pretty good on screen...lol

- the story was really good it was solid, strong, and not drawn out in anyway. it was no Spiderman (THANK GOD!) Although this movie leaves it open again for a sequel it has a beginning and an end.

DISLIKES:

-I like Fishburne alot but i don't think i liked him as the voice of the Silver Surfer, i think they could have altered it a bit more so that you didn't know it was him

-Disappointed about how Galactus is portrayed but i guess the smoke thing will have to do....

- Doom was ok...

Over all the movie was good i think. Alot of ppl says these movies are bad, but to me i think they just can't get over the fact that it is a family of superhero's you are dealing with not the X-MEN.... Families have family tendencies and sometimes that comes off as being really funny, its almost reality, without the superpowers of course. If you enjoyed the first movie you'll def. get a kick out of the 2nd.

Just got back from the theatre with my wife...and We both loved it. I'm a FF fan..so I know the story, she didn't and watch the 1st one and saw this one and said it was great! Sometimes you would like everything in the comics in the movie, but like an early comment, you only can do what you can in 90-120 minutes. I think Tim Story did a great job and should be applauded on this round....I wish it was PG-13, but that kind of sets it up for the 3rd one to be darker and more edgy...

Fantastic Four-Rise of the Silver- VERY STRONG (A-), due to the lack of the real Galactus.. but I can live with, but we'll probably see Galactus in the the Silver Surfer movie

Snake Eyes

At first I didn't know what to think. And then I realized all that I saw was a fairly good introduction for the Silver Surfer. I could have done away with the whole lame FF story line. Story had a few moments of good storytelling, but most of that was most likely due to a great team of digital effects previsualization people.v

I did not particularly care for Laurence Fishburne as the Surfer's voice, but only because in my head Surfer always had kind of a Surfer voice. It's hard to capture that voice in your head, that which is always the best and most true.

And I know my problem with Doom. This time it is the voice. MacMahon is a good looking cat, but when he is Doom, he should not sound like he does. He needs resonance. More gravel and less ... whatever the heck his voice sounds like.

I still think the best performance in these movies goes to the Torch. Chris Evans is so casually good that even the poor script, and weak subplot doesn't affect the easygoing nature of his character.

In short, Tim Story is making Hollywood history as the first black director to handle such large budgets, but what a genre movie needs, is technical brilliance. And though Story is more at home in the Barbershop, he does not have the narrative vision to take the cheese out, nor does he have the visual inventiveness to take it to the next level.

In the future, we an do better.

I really wanted this to be totally and completely the BEST. What I got was "Alright." It had it's good moments but it also had it's slow, boring moments. I want to say see it at the theater, but if you aren't a fan and just want to go see a movie. Don't go see this one. Wait for It when it comes to Dvd. It is totally worth the price of a dvd rental. But I can't recommend you go spend 20 or more dollars to walk out after the movie thinking, "Did that just happen?" Anyway, It was good but don't put a dent in your wallet for it.

"But X2 is still the best comic book movie ever!!!!"

Word on that... and it's the only really good superhero movie made by Fox in my opinion... I'm not looking forward to Wolverine (unless DJ Caruso directs it... that guy is so frickin' underrated it's not funny)

first off I want to say THANK YOU for making a movie that appeals to the family and we all thought it was GREAT.

Silver Surfer - Awesome

Doom - Awesome

Fantastic Four Heros - Awesome as usual

Fantasticar - was awesome - cool how they actually brought it to screen and hopefully they bring in more of it in the next film.

I really wish the movie was longer and I didn't really like the way they did Galactus but I do understand that they needed to intoduce him to set up for the Silver Surfer movie. Still I thought it was still good.

OVER ALL we enjoyed the movie and to TIM STORY keep up the good work you made part 2 better than one and I loved FF 1. I have been a fan of the Fantastic Four my whole life and I like that they are bringing it to the big screen and making them known to those that are not comic fans.

PLEASE DO NOT WAIT YEARS FOR FANTASTIC FOUR 3 or the SILVER SURFER SPINOFF.

GREAT JOB to all who were part of this GREAT FILM. and also to SUPERHEROHYPE for being a great website to get info and to be able to speak our minds.

I thought it was excellent! I thought the first film was okay but i've seen this twice now and think it's absolutely superb. The Silver Surfer was amazingly done and I think the voice of Lawrence Fishburne suited the Surfer but I seem to be in the minority there. Anyway, ignore the nay-sayers and go see it.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was better than FF1 and much better than the train wreck that was Spider Man 3. Was it as good as it could have been? No. But it was still a good little action movie.

I thought it was good.I was a fan of the first one so I was fairly excited to see this one.I have to say I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't blown away either.I was a little upset that the problems from the first film were still here.Poor screenwriting , ocassional plot holes , and a rushed ending. It was good, but I have to say it was just on par with the first one,it's not better, but not worst.

The movie was great but it seemed to short. Too much happening and all too rushed. The Silver Surfer look amazing and was very well done. And it was nice to see Dr.Doom again but the fight, the feeling of danger, just wasn't there cause it all happened so fast. The movie went from the wedding to the weather ocurrance to the Surfer, to the quicky Battle with Dr. Doom to a almost Cameo appearance of Galactus. Least they could have done was stretch this one out to almost 3 hours. But then again, getting the PG rating so kids can see it was probably a big factor in why it stayed so short nd everything again... went soo fast. The things I can only remember most was the bachelor party for Reed cause some time was used for the scene, the switching of power between Ben and Johnny, and the scense with Silver Surfer which I also don't think there were enough of. Still it was cool, but seemed more like the worlds highest and biggest budgeted TV episode ever, then being a HUGE movie...

just got in from watching FF2;ROTS, and tobe honest i think its a good film, not brilliant but that (at the moment)seems tobe the thing this summer??
1/ i feel that the film worked quite well in the "a" story part, surfer, doom, action etc etc but lacked in the "b" story part, wedding, normal life etc etc
2/ the effects were good, loved the HUGE cloud coming towards earth bit...but then theres galactus? its a real shame we barely saw him even as a silouett?? it should have been the watcher, warning of the destroyer, surfer etc etc and then galactus! i would have loved it IF the film ended as a cliff hanger with galactus ship emerging out of the cloud, decending to the earth and big g appearing!!!
3/ who do i have to pay to stop stan lee appearing in every damn marvel film??? ok, he created them so let him do a cameo in the 1st film of each but hes in every damn film, stan, give the ego a break and stay out of all the future marvel movies or so help me.....?
but, as for FF2, ill give it 5/10

I would say this movie is Fantastic even better then the first and has more action then the first one. Also seeing Galactus as a shadow was alright but I'm think we haven't seen the last of him because there must be a reason why Tim Story didn't show galactus perfect and he must want to wait untill the 3rd one.

I saw it last nigt and i thought it had some both good and bad things. For one i loved the introduction of the silver surfer. I also liked the immense action scenes. I would have liked it to be made a pg-13 movie and add on about 15 mintes. The dialoge was very corny and jessica alba almost seemed board. I would have liked to see a little more enthusiasm from her. Overall the movie was good but could have been better. For the sequal i would like to see a more darker movie and keep the silver surfer. He was awesome. I would love to see another installment of the franchise but made a little better.

THIS IS A KIDS MOVIE,I repeat, THIS IS A KIDS MOVIE. The PG rating should be the first clue. If you're over the age of twelve do not see this movie (even if you liked the first one, especially if you didn't like the first one). Parents take your kids to see this movie, they'll love it. Everyone else stay away, you've been warned.

Come on. Do some of you really expect any of the recent superhero movies to be Oscar winners. They're based off of comic books. The acting isn't going to be the best, there is going to be corny dialogue here and there. Just try to watch the movie without nitpicking at everything, and you'll probably enjoy it. FF4 was very well done (along with X-men and Spider-Man) and it raised the bar. Oh, another thing, it was Reed's bachelor party, excuse him for having some fun and wanting to dance. What do you expect from a comic book movie? (With the exception of Ghost Rider. That was bad. I mean, when Blackheart absorbed all of the souls, he should have at least turned into the Blackheart from the comics. That movie could've been done way better.)

Honestly. It wasn't horrible.
But in my opinion this is what is wrong with it.

Tim Story - Yes, hes a black director yes his "Babershop" movies are good. But he does not have what it takes to bring the Fantastic Four to the big screen. Comic books are cheesy, this I know, I,ve been a collector since I was 11. But Tim doesn't have the talent to make it not seem cheesy, and add a sense of realness.

Jessica Alba - Yes she's hot. But she is the worst person to play Susan Storm, she looks ridicules with that blond hair, and her acting talent has always sucked. People just dont complain about her because everyone thinks shes so pretty. Oh and she is mexican playing a white women and its clear to everyone that Johnny Storm[Chris Evans] is white.

Galactus - A Cloud. Seriously?

Fantasicar - Super Cheesy...and what about the fucking dodge logos. Hella Lame.

Dr. Doom - I feel like Julian Mcmonahan was not a good choice for doom. Hes great in Nip/Tuck but I dont think he pulled Doom off well at all.

Here is what I thought was decent:

Silver Surfer - Amazing looking. But I would have liked to here "Doug Jones" take on the voice instead of "Lauren Fishburne"

The Team - With the exeption of Jessica Alba, everyone seemed comfortable in there rolls the acting was better than the first one.

In all reality I could care less if they make a sequel. But thats just my opinion.

As a fan of the comics, I can say, I am thoroughly unimpressed. Granted this movie was PG and had to be written out as such, I think this became very obvious. For the most part the actors did in the very least okay, but the lines they were given to deliver lacked a certain smoothness.

As many have noted, I was seriously perturbed at the fact that they had the Surfer's powers coming from his surfboard. I won't even go into this, as many have already stated it before.

Doom. Doom, Doom, Doom. While he looked good, that was about it. I think I read something earlier about his voice - which I agree with. Doom's voice should definitely be more ominous, commanding, dark. He seemed more like Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor than the egotistical Doom he should be.

A break from comic book discrepancies, but is it just me, or am I mistaken when I say: What is a Grizzly Bear doing in the middle of Germany and the Black Forest?

Alicia - In the comics, she is not black, and is blind. They didn't even try here.

Galactus - I think you know where I'll take this.

Overall, I am quite upset at the serious lack of comic book attention. I don't wish for it to be spot on, but to me it seems like they barely even tried. If you're going to base something on the comics and give it full comic advertising, then at least make it look like SOMEONE picked up a comic or two.

I recently viewed the movie, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, two days ago. Needlessly, I have to say that I did like the movie whether it is PG rated. All professional movie critic knows for a fact that you can not judge the storyline just by its rating-- There have been many great PG movies out there, especially Star Wars (5 movies out of 6 in the entire saga), first Indiana Jones, Superman (1978) to name a few.. There isn't anything wrong with "family orientated" movies.. In the comics of Fantastic four, it is not even rated PG-13..

I liked the storyline.. It actually has a point that makes sense. Tim Story had delievered a well structured story that will prove a good movie for this kind of genre. Galactus was unexpected to appear in cloud form.. Then again, I realized the cosmic beings CAN appear in ANY forms they wish especially with God-like powers.

I noticed people in general are pissed because their expectation aren't met. Here's a proverb: Once people go in the movie theatre establishing their own 'expectation' of the movie, their bubble WILL be popped.

I give this movie 8.5 for well sturctured movie. Well defined ideas especially with Silver Surfer. It is a great summer movie and I WILL see it again and again because it is a fun movie! Go and see it without expectation whatsoever!

the guy directed "Taxi", need anyone say more?

I'm not to sure what most critics saw, but the movie I wacthed last night was incredible! The structure, the plot, effects and the development of each character was amazing. I'm not sure what else you were expecting from FF2; it showed them in society using their powers with more control and skill. It allowed us to see Johnny's never ending ego turn into more of a team player, Sue and Reed's ever complicated relationship, Ben as a strong but lovable hero to the world around him, it even allowed us to see Reed standing up for not only himself, but his family against a true bully. And it showed the dark and sinister nature of Victor Von Doom and, that as we have all read, he is a man that can not be trusted even for a moment.
Okay, sure they made Jessica Alba's Sue Storm look like a cracked-out Barbie (the blue contacts, BLEACHED blond hair, and whitened face was a little much), but the Surfer and Johnny's powers fluxing made up for it completely (For the record fan boy's he wasn't trying to be the Super Skrull, if you knew more of the comic you would know that at one time he becomes Galactus' herald and his powers take on the same problem as the movie showed).
They didn't show that much of Galactus which kinda bites, but if they do a Surfer spin off, I am sure we will be able to see much more of the planet devour and him battle it out.
The movie flowed smoothly without a lot of talk, unnecessary information or back story (that's because the first one, which so many seem to be disappointed with, did for us. Hence, Origin Story).
I hope for a third, because there is a so much more ground that can be covered for the first family of super heroes in the Marvel Universe!

First of all, I'd like to apologize to Tim Story for all the morons that have posted that can't even spell. I hope you don't think a Hollywood director will actually take your comments seriously when you type like a five year old, least of all the other people in the forum.
I am a fan of comics in general and there were many things in this movie that worked and a couple of things that just really got under my skin. I knew going into the theater that Galactus was going to be conceived as a energy cloud, so I wasn't that disappointed. But I was upset that Surfer was able to just convert/displace/destroy Galactus without any help or explaination.

Number 1: if his power was derived from Galactus there would be no way he could accomplish such a feat (logic error) and if his power was his to begin with (I only offer this alternative because Story opted to wait for a Surfer movie before actually explaining how the surfer got his power) he would have taken out Galactus when the cloud first showed up at his planet.

Number 2: if you're going to use Alba as Sue (granted she is smoking hot), and other people here have stated this, then use your creative license to let her look more natural. I was only ok with the blue contacts if I didn't look at her face, which is a shame because she is very pretty. The hair, as other people have said, doesn't look natural either; being completely bleached out like that, highlights would have been a better choice.

Number 3: there were some things I thought needed to be included but weren't (maybe they will be on an extended cut DVD). Johnny Storm is supposed to be learning how to be a team player in this movie, which he does, but I didn't really feel like the movie flushed out those parts: he just becomes a new guy. I would have loved to have seen him trade powers with Ben so that the Thing could actually use his thing with his GF for a night (the bar scene where Johnny lights the dart board on fire would have been a great place to initiate this part), and Johnny would have had some time experiencing the life of somebody he has always made fun of and maybe gain some newfound respect for Ben. This maybe would have pushed it to PG-13, but as Story said in his SHH! interview, PG is just the way it turned out, not what they were shooting for.

Next big plot hole, why the hell should the surfer give a rat's ass about a planet with people that torture him? In the comic books, its the greater side of Humanity that convinces the Surfer that the Earth is worth saving. He's doomed other planets before the Earth, but those planets were all despicable and full of evil people. But in the movie, all he needs is to see Alba's 'pretty' face to remind him of his lost love and that motivates him to defy Galactus?! Sorry, but I call BS!

I thought Doom wasn't coming back for this movie and I think he was extraneous. A monstrous, intergalactic devourer of worlds is much more menacing and captivating as a villain. Which brings me to..
Number 4: Galactus is a dude, a very powerful, nearly omnipotent, ageless....dude. Not a damn plasma cloud. He travels along in a huge spaceship that takes planets apart and sits on a throne. He didn't have to be purple, he just needed to be a he and not an it. I was hoping this movie would end in a cliffhanger (like a previous forum poster noted), where throughout the whole movie the FF4 are trying to convince the Surfer that their planet is worth saving (maybe throw in some villains that they stop while he watches, to see their compassion for each other and humanity) and then right as he starts to come around Galactus shows up...a face as large as the moon leans in to have a word with his servant. Bam! credits.

All this being said, I thought the movie was fun, eye-popping (not always for the best, in the case of Sue's eyes and hair), and a good summer action flick for the family. Do I think it could have been all these things and more closely tied to the general comic story lines? Yes.

BTW: I was fine with the plugs until the damned Dodge Hemi Fantasticar. I don't care if dodge paid for the whole movie, that was completely unnecessary and bad for the flow (which as a director -Tim- its your responsibility to lay down the law in that department, I don't know why you dropped the ball then). Thank you and good night.

at the beginning I was waiting for Leornard Nimoy to start speaking "space the final Frontier these are the voyages of . . . "
jessica alba looked more like jessica simpson
galactus was missing
too much stupid jokes (dancing, wedding, torches personal problems w/self ) conflicting
I expected so much more
not saying that I was blowing out of proportion but alot could of been done.

Stan Lee was Ok in the guest list scene but remeber he was a mail guy in the first movie and now he's stan lee. Question does Mr. Fantastic ,Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and Thing actually know Stan Lee ? conflicting

ONE WORD IS DIZMUL

'Everyone is entitled to their opinion.' This agrument is perfect example of first amendment in action-- Freedom of speech.

The movie is well produced regardless it did not meet some people's expectation. It provided the fountation of fantastic four's values in the comics. My opinion is this: Go and see the movie and see the wonderful dynamics of Fantastic Four.

I do not want to limit anyone's perspective and lock them in a 'box' when they have many opporunites to see the uncanny vision that the comics' universe has provided. Again-- that is just my opinion. You are welcome to disagree with me. I just despite seeing anyone being limited by other people's opinion...

I think the movie was great. It was much better than the first. It was funny, like when Reed was at the wedding and he look at johnny and he was like my suit ,do you know whats its made of... was so funny . The way the Silver Surfer looked was great. I really enjoyed this movie. I thought they took elements from the comic,(for those who read it) when Johnny and Susan traded traded powers and John became the herald of Galactus, because he needed the powers of the invisible woman. Or when johnny looked at Galactus and saw what he really was which was like something like a entity, or cloud in the movie . Also so in heroes reborn, when Galactus did come the Earth, The Silver Surfer ended up turning against Galactus, he shot him with his cosmic power and other power that was two raw for Galactus which ended up killing him. So I could see how he could kill him in the movie. I though the movie was great and i can't wait to see the third movie and i hope they have franklin in that movie
